Haiti Confirms Gang Leader Mathias Saintil Killed
Haitian authorities confirmed that Mathias Saintil, leader of the Boston gang in Port-au-Prince’s Cité Soleil neighborhood, died after being seriously wounded in a security operation on November 5. Accounts differ on how he was injured: a human rights group said a drone strike caused abdominal wounds, while police described multiple gunshot wounds. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé called his death “one less gang leader” and said the campaign against armed groups would continue. His killing comes as Haiti intensifies security operations ahead of delayed elections, with about 2,000 Salvadoran troops deployed and some Haitians publicly backing their country’s hard-line approach to gangs.
