Haiti Finds Burned Vehicle, Four Salvadorans Missing
Haitian police found the charred remains of a vehicle believed to have carried four Salvadoran aviation technicians who disappeared after an October 18 attack in gang-controlled territory near Port-au-Prince; the men remain missing. The search involved Haitian police, Salvadoran troops and the U.N.-backed Gang Suppression Force, but the U.N. says only about 200 Salvadoran soldiers are part of the force, and analysts say the separate deployment’s command structure, rules of engagement and duration remain unclear. El Salvador’s president has sent more than 2,000 troops, while Haitian officials say foreign forces operate under Haitian authority; Doctors Without Borders reported 30 people injured by gunfire and drone explosions in the days after the attack, and a gang leader has called for dialogue with the U.N.
