A BMJ analysis of 235 brains from deceased NFL players who played since 1949 found 215 with CTE, yielding a minimum prevalence of 24.5% and suggesting the rate could be higher depending on sample and method; other studies report about 25% in larger donor groups and show much higher rates when considering all donated brains. Live prevalence cannot be diagnosed, since CTE is confirmed only post-mortem.
