Pope Leo Recovering After Lung Cancer Surgery
Pope Leo XIV is recovering steadily at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, where doctors found a cancerous adenocarcinoma. Blood tests and chest X-rays have been reassuring, and he is breathing, moving and carrying out daily activities independently while continuing respiratory physiotherapy. The Vatican released images of the 71-year-old pope celebrating Mass at the hospital and thanking medical staff. Further test results are expected to clarify whether the cancer has spread and whether he needs additional treatment. His public engagements are suspended until at least October 20, and his planned November trip to Latin America remains uncertain; he is expected to lead the Angelus on Sunday.
