Nigeria Investigates Possible Link to Kenya Ebola Case
Ebola transmission has intensified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with 9,637 confirmed cases and 4,646 deaths reported by Oct. 19, and the outbreak has spread to Kenya and Nigeria. Nigeria’s first confirmed case is a woman who arrived from Uganda and is isolated in Abuja; her condition was reported to have deteriorated. Authorities are investigating her travel and contacts, including whether she crossed paths with Kenya’s index case at Entebbe airport, and Africa CDC has urged her to provide a full travel history. Officials have identified 44 contacts and are urging potentially exposed passengers and others to cooperate with tracing. Nigerian authorities have stepped up surveillance, facility readiness and public education, while the WHO says insecurity, displacement, restricted humanitarian access, stigma and mistrust are complicating the response in Congo.
