Michael Wilbon takes indefinite ESPN leave for health
Michael Wilbon announced on Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, an indefinite leave from co-hosting ESPN's Pardon the Interruption and from NBA analyst duties at ESPN and ABC, citing struggles with multiple health issues in recent months. Wilbon, 67, said the step is not retirement and offered no return date. He has co-hosted PTI with Tony Kornheiser since the show's debut on Oct. 22, 2001. Wilbon said he probably should have listened sooner to medical professionals and people closest to him, including Kornheiser, who saw worrisome signs in recent years. He cited a close friend's line that the bill has come due, and said the struggles are all health related, not alcohol or gambling. His goal is to return feeling better and ready to spar with Kornheiser. ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro backed the leave and said the network looks forward to welcoming him back whenever he is ready. Coverage noted possible PTI fill-ins Mina Kimes, Pablo Torre, and Frank Isola. Reuters reported Wilbon had a heart attack in January 2008 and has battled type-2 diabetes. Ernie Johnson separately said he will leave Inside the NBA after the 2026-27 season. CONTESTED: none found. Specific conditions and any return date remain undisclosed.
