Wisconsin Infant Dies in 431-Case Measles Outbreak
A Wisconsin infant has died of measles, the state’s first measles-related death since 1990 and the third reported in the U.S. this week. As of Nov. 3, Wisconsin had reported 431 cases across 13 counties and nine hospitalizations, though officials warn the actual total may be higher; it is the state’s largest outbreak in more than 35 years. The largest outbreak is centered in southwestern Wisconsin, with a separate cluster in Chippewa County. Officials are withholding details about the infant to protect the family’s privacy and urge unvaccinated residents to get the MMR vaccine; two doses are about 97% effective at preventing measles.
