Helena, Folsom Consider Stricter E-Bike Rules
Helena, Alabama, officials are still weighing an e-bike and motorized-device ordinance prompted by complaints about speeding, stop-sign violations and conflicts with pedestrians; it has not been adopted. The proposal would set trail and path speed limits, require riders to yield to pedestrians and warn before passing, and impose safety and operating rules, with fines of up to $500 and possible jail time. At a recent work session, council members considered broadening the rules to cover devices such as e-scooters, motorized dirt bikes and electric motorcycles, and discussed changing the proposed speed limit on Hillsboro Trail to 10 mph to match an existing city rule. Officials also floated alternatives to fines, including impounding devices, and said they would seek more public input before making a decision.
