Herbert Blomstedt, Seven-Decade Conductor, Dies at 99
Herbert Blomstedt, the Swedish-American conductor whose career spanned more than seven decades, died at 99 at his home in Gothenburg, Sweden, on Nov. 4, 2026. He led major orchestras around the world, including the Staatskapelle Dresden, San Francisco Symphony, and Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, and was admired for his musical insight, discipline, humility, and fidelity to composers’ intentions. Blomstedt remained active into his late 90s; his final concert was in May with the San Francisco Symphony, where a performance of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony was interrupted after he became unwell. He later withdrew from scheduled performances, ending a career that continued long after most conductors had retired.
