Hiker Dead, Another Missing on Sauk Mountain, Pizol

Search crews found 78-year-old Peter Kalapaca dead on Washington’s Sauk Mountain after he was reported missing while hiking with family members. A helicopter located him Friday evening in steep, inaccessible terrain, and a North Cascades National Park helicopter later conducted the recovery. Ground teams, air resources, search dogs, mountain rescuers and partner agencies participated in the operation. The Sauk Mountain Trail, which had been temporarily closed during the search, has reopened, and authorities offered condolences to Kalapaca’s family.
