Body of missing hiker recovered on Mount Appleton in Olympic park

The body of 26-year-old Neil Gehring was recovered in Olympic National Park after he went missing during an overnight backcountry trip that began Aug. 31. Searchers found him on the northwest slope of Mount Appleton after analyzing additional cellphone location data, ending a search that involved helicopters, drones, dogs, ground teams and numerous volunteers. Gehring had planned to travel cross-country from Boulder Lake to Appleton Pass and return to the Madison Falls Trailhead, but was reported overdue on Sept. 2. His body was transferred to the Clallam County Coroner’s Office, and officials have not disclosed the circumstances of his death.
