Hilton Head Man Gets 20 Years for Shooting Woman in Head

Bernard “Berney” Garvin Jr., 35, was sentenced to 20 years in prison plus five years’ probation after a Beaufort County jury convicted him of attempted murder and possessing a weapon during a violent crime. Prosecutors said that during a June 2023 dispute at Hilton Head Gardens, Garvin fired at least four shots at a woman who had confronted him while he was struggling with another woman over a liquor bottle. One bullet grazed the victim’s head, and she was hospitalized in intensive care for possible bleeding on the brain. Garvin was arrested in Georgia three months after the shooting and extradited to Beaufort County.
