Historic US Taverns Pair Food With Ghost Lore

Several historic American taverns and restaurants pair old buildings and local lore with food and drink. Natchez’s King’s Tavern dates to 1789 and is known for its wood-fired flatbreads, cocktails and legend of a ghost named Madeline. Baltimore’s Horse You Came In On Saloon has operated since 1775; staff honor a ghost called Edgar, while the story that Edgar Allan Poe drank there before his death remains unproven. Massachusetts’ Wayside Inn, which traces its history to 1716, is celebrated for its Colonial-era setting and literary and Revolutionary War associations. St. Louis’ Lemp Mansion and Pennsylvania’s Duffy’s Tavern likewise draw visitors with historic settings and reported paranormal activity, though supernatural claims remain matters of belief.
