Historic WWII Submarine Expected Back in Muskegon
The USS Silversides, a decorated World War II submarine and museum ship in Muskegon, departed Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, after a $3.5 million dry-dock preservation project and is being towed back across Lake Michigan. The work included hull cleaning, structural inspections, steel repairs and protective coatings, intended to extend the vessel’s life for decades; it was the submarine’s first full dry docking in more than 50 years. The museum expected the submarine to arrive Saturday morning, with timing dependent on lake conditions, and said it remained $215,000 short of its fundraising goal.
