Crews Respond to Separate House Fires in Three States
Fire crews responded to separate residential fires in Warsaw, Indiana; Jackson, Mississippi; and Sturgis, South Dakota. In Warsaw, the fire was brought under control about 45 minutes after crews arrived, but officials had not determined its cause. In Jackson, a large fire sent flames and smoke high into the air, with details about injuries still pending. In Sturgis, firefighters contained the fire to the attic of a home; no one was inside, and no injuries to people or pets were reported, though the house sustained smoke and water damage. The incidents underscore Red Cross fire-prevention advice: keep combustibles at least three feet from heat sources, turn heaters off when unattended or asleep, maintain heating equipment, address unsafe wiring, and charge lithium-ion batteries with the proper cord on a nonflammable surface.
