Houston University Reports 61% Rise in Violence Reports
Reports of sexual violence and related offenses have prompted renewed scrutiny of campus prevention and support efforts. At the University of Oregon, five assaults were reported during the first week of classes, and the university president urged students to complete required online prevention training; reporting cited by OPB says such modules alone may be insufficient and could even have unintended effects. At the University of Houston, reported violence against women rose 61% from 2024 to 2025, including increases in dating and domestic violence, though experts cautioned that higher figures may partly reflect greater awareness and willingness to report. Houston officials point to prevention education and individualized support, while a sociologist stressed that victim-blaming and the consolidation of a women’s resource center may affect how safely students can seek help. Separately, a commentary about an alleged assault at Cornell argues that public reactions to the case reflect broader rape-culture attitudes; the allegations remain allegations.
