How to buy Israeli stocks from America
By How To (/journals/how-to)
Shares that already trade on a U.S. board keep the order in dollars and inside the tax forms you already completed. A direct Tel Aviv leg adds a currency conversion and extra paperwork, so the dual-listed or ADR route is the shorter path.
Your existing online brokerage session is enough when that firm shows international or OTC equities on the trade ticket.
1: OPEN your brokerage on the laptop and sign in until the main portfolio balance line is visible.
You know it worked when the top bar shows your account name and a dollar total, not a blank login card. If you only see a password field, retype the password and press the key labeled Return.
2: CONFIRM the trade or research tab lists Equities and a market filter that includes U.S. and OTC.
Scan the left nav or top tabs for the word Equities or Trade. You are ready when a market dropdown or checkbox row shows U.S. and OTC or International; if those words are missing, stop and use only U.S.-listed names later.
3: SEARCH the company name or ticker in the symbol box until one result row appears.
Type the letters into the field that sits beside the magnifying-glass icon. Correct when a single row shows the ticker, company name, and a venue tag such as NASDAQ, NYSE, or OTC; pick that row with one click.
4: LOOK at the venue and currency lines on the quote panel before touching Buy.
Read the line under the price that names the exchange and the currency code. Green path: it says USD and a U.S. venue. If it shows ILS or TLV, do not continue on that row—search again for the U.S.-listed twin.
5: ENTER the share count in the quantity field and choose Market or Limit on the order ticket.
Click Buy so the ticket slides open. Type a whole number in Quantity, leave the currency reading USD, and set the order type with the control that sits under the price field. The ticket is right when estimated cost shows a dollar sign only.
6: SUBMIT the order with the button that reads Place Order or Submit Buy.
Press that button once. Success is a confirmation banner or a new row in Orders or Activity that shows Filled or Working plus the same ticker. If it returns Rejected, open the message text and fix the field it names.
7: VERIFY the fill in Positions so the share count and USD value both appear.
Open Positions or Holdings. You are done when the ticker is on its own line with share quantity and a dollar market value. If the line is missing, refresh once; still missing means the order never filled—return to Activity.
The most common mistake
Submitting when the quote still shows ILS or a Tel Aviv venue—cancel, search the U.S. twin, and only submit on a USD line.
Pro tip
After the fill, open the trade confirmation PDF from Activity and save it into your tax folder for the year; say **USD line then Place**.
