How to do a cartwheel
By How To (/journals/how-to)
Keep every joint locked so your body stays one rigid spoke that pivots over the hands. That single rule turns a tip-over into a controlled wheel instead of a collapse.
You'll need: ten feet of clear soft floor or grass and bare feet or grippy shoes.
1: START in a lunge with your lead foot three feet forward, front knee bent to ninety degrees, and both arms stretched straight up by your ears.
Square your hips toward the side you will travel. You feel set when the back leg stays straight and both heels press the floor. If the stride measures under three feet, step the lead foot out again before you move.
2: PLACE both hands on the floor one foot ahead of the lead foot, shoulder-width apart and on one straight line.
Set the first hand, then the second. You know the base is solid when both palms lie flat and elbows lock bone-straight. If either elbow softens, straighten it before the kick.
3: KICK the back leg skyward in one strong arc that passes vertical twelve o'clock.
Push hard from the back toes and keep the leg straight. Count a full one-second hang at the peak before the second leg moves. If the heel stops below hip height, drive harder from the hip next try.
4: DRIVE the second leg over to meet the first so both feet clear the top together.
Keep hips high and legs wide in a straddle. The float feels right when weight rests only on the hands for that one-second count. Pull the trailing leg faster if it drags and slows the spin.
5: LAND first one foot then the other into a reverse lunge facing the opposite direction.
Bend the landing knee slightly to absorb. You stick it when both feet plant flat a foot apart and you balance without a stumble. If you fall forward shorten the kick; if you land short add more drive.
The most common mistake
Bending the elbows is the single riskiest habit because it drops your head toward the floor. Lock both arms straight the instant hands touch so your skull stays at least one foot clear.
Pro tip
Draw a straight chalk line and keep every hand and foot on it for five slow reps before full speed.
Say it every time
Wide base, flat palms, heels to sky, soft stick

The hand placement order you described finally let me land a clean rotation without wobbling.
