How to lift a heavy box safely
By How To (/journals/how-to)
Every move keeps the box tight to your body so your legs do the work instead of your spine. Have the closed box in an open spot, wear closed-toe shoes, and keep a clear walking line to the drop point.
1: STAND with feet shoulder-width apart and toes aimed straight at the box.
Place both feet so the box sits between them. Shift until weight feels even on the balls and heels. You know the stance is right when you feel balanced without rocking.
2: BEND at the knees and hips until hands reach the bottom edges.
Keep your chest up and back flat as you lower. Stop when thighs are near parallel to the floor. You see your knees track over your toes and your back stays long.
3: GRIP opposite bottom corners with palms up and fingers wrapped under.
Slide hands fully under the flaps if they open. Squeeze until the cardboard cannot twist. You hear a soft paper scrape as the box settles into your hands.
4: RAISE by driving through your heels and straightening both legs together.
Keep the box pressed to your belly the whole way up. Pause at full height only when legs are locked soft. You feel the load move into your thighs and off your lower back.
5: HOLD the box snug against your torso no more than six inches away.
Elbows stay bent and tight to your ribs. Glance down to confirm the gap. If the box sits farther than six inches pull it in; if it presses hard into your gut ease it out one inch.
6: STEP forward in short even strides while looking at the floor ahead.
Take steps no longer than one foot length. Keep the box still against you. You hear each boot land with the same soft thud and know the path is clear.
7: LOWER by bending knees again until the box rests fully on the floor.
Reverse the rise with back still flat. Let the bottom touch before you release your grip. You feel the floor take the full weight when your hands lighten.
The most common mistake
Rounding the lower back to reach the box. Bend at the knees and hips instead so the spine stays long.
Pro tip
Test-lift the box one inch first; if it feels heavier than you can hold steady, stop and get a second person.
Say it every time
Close the gap, legs do the lift, eyes on the path
