Pack more in a suitcase by rolling clothes and weighting wheels
By How To (/journals/how-to)
Packing a suitcase is fitting belongings so every space works and clothes stay neat. Rolling soft items and weighting the wheel end gives extra room and a case that rolls upright.
Have ready your suitcase open on a flat bed, clothes sorted in piles, shoes, a closed toiletry kit, and small extras like cords.
1: LAY the suitcase fully open and flat on the bed with a clear two-foot space all around it.
Face the wheel end away from you so the handle side is nearest. You know the setup is solid when the case does not shift as you lean on it. If it rocks, slide it onto a firmer spot in the middle of the bed.
2: PLACE shoes and other hard heavy items along the wheel end, nested heel to toe.
Keep soles facing out against the case walls. The balance checks out when the upright case does not flop over. If it tips toward the handle, slide the heavies closer to the wheels; if it tips the other way, ease them back an inch.
3: ROLL each soft garment into a cylinder as thick as your fist, starting from the hem.
Tuck sleeves or pant legs in as you go so edges stay inside. You can tell the roll is ready when it stays rolled after you let go. If it springs open, roll again with firmer pressure; if fabric bunches, unroll and smooth once before restarting.
4: LINE the rolls side by side from the wheel end forward until the base is covered.
Press them together so gaps stay smaller than your palm. The row is set when a light pat meets even push-back across the top. Add a roll if any gap exceeds palm width; lift one out if the clothes crest above the rim.
5: TUCK the toiletry kit and loose smalls into gaps and any lid compartments.
Seat each piece so it lies even with the clothes around it. Run your palm over the surface to confirm no high spots remain. If something pokes up, shove it deeper or swap to a side pocket; if a hollow larger than two fingers stays, drop in socks or a belt.
6: CLOSE the lid down evenly and zip from the center out along both tracks.
Move each zipper pull with even speed and pause at the first resistance. Success shows when both zippers meet at the end without strain and the sides stay straight. If fabric catches, back the zipper a short way, smooth the edge, and continue.
The most common mistake
Yanking the zipper on a bulging case is the riskiest moment and often splits the seam. Open up, remove one roll, and redistribute before zipping again.
Pro tip
Slide a pair of socks into each shoe before you place it so the hollow holds extra gear.
