How to patch a small drywall hole

Build a thin, flush fill that bonds to the paper face and sands level so paint hides the repair. Keep the layer light; thick blobs shrink and show.
Have ready spackling compound, a one-inch putty knife, fine sandpaper, a damp cloth, and matching wall paint.
1: LOOK at the hole first to confirm it is smaller than a dime and the paper edges lie flat.
Press the rim gently with a fingertip. If paper flaps or the opening is wider than half an inch, stop and switch to a mesh patch instead.
2: WIPE the spot with a damp cloth to lift dust and loose crumbs so the compound sticks.
Let the surface air-dry for one minute. Any grit left under the fill will create a bump you can feel later.
3: SPREAD a pea-size dab of spackle across the hole with the putty knife held at a thirty-degree angle.
Draw the blade in one smooth pass so a slight mound sits proud of the wall. If the knife scrapes the hole empty, reload a smaller dab and ease pressure.
4: WAIT until the fill turns uniformly dull and feels dry to a light fingertip touch, about two hours.
Do not rush. Soft compound gums up sandpaper and pulls out of the hole.
5: SAND the dry mound with fine sandpaper using light circular strokes until it sits flush with the wall.
Run your palm across the spot; it should feel even, with no ridge. If you hit a low crater, add a second thin coat and wait again.
6: WIPE away the sanding dust with the damp cloth so paint will bond cleanly.
Check under good light; leftover powder leaves a rough halo. One clean pass is enough.
7: DAB matching paint over the spot with a small brush or fingertip using one thin coat.
Feather the edges outward an inch. After it dries, the repair should vanish under normal room light.
The most common mistake
Loading the knife with a thick glob leaves a raised blister that telegraphs through paint. Use only a pea-size amount and keep the blade angle shallow.
