Ride a bike by lowering the seat and gliding first
By How To (/journals/how-to)
Roll the bike before you pedal. Balance comes from forward speed, not from sitting still.
Have a bike with working hand brakes, a flat open stretch at least fifty feet long, a helmet that sits level, and shoes that grip.
1: LOWER the seat until both feet rest flat on the ground when you sit on the saddle.
Bend your knees slightly and confirm the full sole of each foot touches pavement. If only your toes reach, drop the seat one more inch. You are set when you can plant both feet without tipping.
2: WALK the bike forward about twenty feet while seated, pushing the ground with both feet.
Keep your pushes short and even. Say push, push out loud with each step. You know it is working when the bike stays upright and your feet stay low beside the cranks.
3: GLIDE with both feet lifted after two strong pushes, coasting a straight fifteen feet.
Lift your feet and let the bike roll. Keep your eyes on a point ahead, not on the wheel. When the bike slows, plant both feet and stop clean.
4: PEDAL by setting one pedal at two o’clock on your dominant side.
Press that pedal down to start the roll, then find the other pedal with your free foot. Make three full turns before you touch the ground again. The run is right when the bike stays steady through all three turns.
5: LOOK ahead at a fixed spot about thirty feet in front of you.
Do not stare at the front wheel or your feet. Eyes up keeps the bars steady and the path straight. Check that you hold the line for the full roll.
6: SQUEEZE both brake levers gently while you are still seated.
The levers sit on the handlebars under your fingers. Use light pressure relative to your speed so you slow without skidding. Practice until you stop in a straight line with both feet ready to plant.
The most common mistake
Most riders stare down at the front wheel and wobble. Fix it by picking a spot thirty feet ahead and saying eyes up.
Pro tip
Start your glides on a slight downslope so speed comes free before you add pedals.
Say it every time
Lower, walk, glide, pedal, look, squeeze
