HSBC to Launch Hong Kong AI Institute in 2027 with University Partner
HSBC said it will open a global AI and Emerging Technology Research Institute in Hong Kong in early 2027, working with HKUST on research and talent. Georges Elhedery confirmed the plan at Hong Kong FinTech Week x StartmeupHK and said a fuller public announcement would come shortly. The institute is to combine research with application teams so projects can move into bank businesses, starting on skills, AI security and fraud detection, post-quantum cryptography, and blockchain. Liao Yijian said technology is reshaping financial services at an unprecedented pace and that HSBC has a responsibility to explore opportunities with prudence and apply important innovations for customers. Wire figures put the institute’s opening staff at at least 35 specialists and an expansion of the existing Hong Kong AI team from 150 to 300 over the next two to three years. Coverage places a longer-term site in the Northern Metropolis once space is ready, with Elhedery pointing to availability by 2028; BigGo frames that location as a commitment and notes room for more technology partners later. Output and any wider partner list remain ahead of the 2027 start.
