Hurricane Vance Nears Mexico, Could Reach Category 3
Hurricane Vance reached Category 1 strength over the Pacific, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph about 440 miles south-southwest of Acapulco. The National Hurricane Center said it could rapidly strengthen into a major Category 3 hurricane, while moving north-northwest and remaining offshore in the near term. Vance is forecast to approach Mexico’s Pacific coast next week, but it remains uncertain whether it will stay at sea or make landfall. Dangerous surf and rip currents are expected along parts of the coast, and a closer approach could bring damaging winds, heavy rain, flooding and mudslides.
