IAEA Chief Predicts Nuclear Power More Than Tripling by 2060
The International Atomic Energy Agency projects that global nuclear power capacity could more than triple by 2060 in its high-growth scenario, as electrification, AI data centers and demand for reliable low-carbon electricity drive renewed interest in nuclear energy. A more cautious scenario still sees capacity nearly doubling, though either outcome depends on policy, investment and construction. More than 400 reactors in over 30 countries currently generate about 10% of global electricity, and more than 60 new reactors are under construction. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said more countries see nuclear power as important to energy security and described its safety profile as comparable to solar. He also warned about nuclear safety risks from the war in Ukraine and urged renewed diplomacy on Iran, including the return of IAEA inspectors, while noting North Korea’s nuclear program is developing without agency oversight.
