Ice Cream Shops Report Closures, Expansion, Financial Strain
Several ice cream and restaurant businesses are undergoing changes. Kalamazoo’s Rollup Ice Cream is closing after nearly seven years, with food truck Cluck & Moo set to take over its location and serve burgers, chicken tenders, fries, and ice cream. In Portland, Cloud City Ice Cream says it may not survive another year without raising $60,000 through crowdfunding after financial strain and an equipment failure. Always Ice Cream Company plans a Bethesda shop by spring 2028, adding to its planned first Montgomery County location at Pike and Rose. In St. Petersburg, the space formerly occupied by the century-old Coney Island Sandwich Shop is available to lease, with the family hoping another locally owned restaurant will continue its community role. Maryland’s seasonal Jimmie Cone has closed for the year and expects to reopen in March 2027.
