ICE Deaths Draw Vigils, Voting Activism Across States
Fatal encounters involving immigration enforcement have become focal points for public mourning and political action. In Maine, demonstrators say the killing of Colombian immigrant Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero has changed minds about immigration enforcement as early voting rises. In Houston, a memorial to Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, killed by ICE officers, has become a place where supporters dedicate their votes to him; early voting in the surrounding East End has increased compared with 2018. Separately, Día de Muertos organizers held a vigil outside the Otay Mesa detention center to honor people who died in ICE custody, as local officials called for an independent investigation into a recent death there.
