ICJ Set to Rule on Myanmar Genocide Case
The International Court of Justice will issue its final, nonappealable judgment on November 19 in The Gambia’s case alleging that Myanmar bears state responsibility for genocide against the Rohingya under the Genocide Convention. The case stems from Myanmar’s 2017 military crackdown, which drove more than 700,000 Rohingya into Bangladesh amid reports of killings, rape and arson. Myanmar denies genocide and says its actions were a counterterrorism response. The ruling will be only the third genocide judgment in the court’s history and could influence other cases, including South Africa’s case against Israel; although the ICJ has no direct enforcement mechanism, a finding against Myanmar could intensify international pressure. Human Rights Watch says the decision comes as Rohingya oppression continues and calls on governments to support justice and a safe, voluntary return.
