Inclusive Playground Projects Spread Across North America

New playgrounds in Kentucky, North Dakota, Cambridge and Rochester are creating safer, more inclusive places for children to play. St. Joseph Children’s Home opened a $4 million playground and wellness complex designed both for recreation and to support therapy for children who have experienced trauma. Minot’s new all-inclusive playground includes wheelchair access, cushioned surfacing and a communication board, while Cambridge’s Hespeler Optimist Park features ground-level play and a wheelchair-accessible sensory tunnel. Rochester’s community-built playground adds features such as moving platforms, chimes and accessible climbing equipment, addressing a neighborhood need for a better play space. Organizers and advocates say inclusive play helps children of different abilities connect, build confidence and learn, while giving families access to welcoming community spaces.
