Indiana Sen. Alting Resigns, Remains on Ballot
Indiana state Sen. Ron Alting, a Republican who has represented Senate District 22 since 1998, says he will leave office and focus on his health and family. His announcement follows allegations of shoplifting at Walmart locations, which he did not detail in his statement; he said he had done things that were wrong and out of character and apologized to his family, colleagues, constituents and store employees. Alting said he is undergoing medical evaluations for changes in judgment, behavior and cognitive functioning, but doctors have not yet reached a definitive diagnosis. Because early voting is underway, his name will remain on the ballot; if he wins re-election, the Republican Party will select his successor through its vacancy process.
