Indigenous Heritage Events Span US Communities
Several projects and events are highlighting Indigenous cultures, history and creative expression. Central Wyoming College’s “Connected Threads” exhibition showcases Indigenous beadwork, regalia, textiles and other art through Jan. 29, 2027, while a Columbia exhibition pairs historical portraits with Indigenous artists’ work to examine representation, identity and ties to place. The Library of Congress is asking volunteers to help complete transcriptions of documents related to Ojibwe poet and storyteller Jane Johnston Schoolcraft and her family during Native American Heritage Month. The documentary “Why We Dance,” featuring Indigenous communities across North America and exploring cultural resilience through dance, will screen at Grinnell College on Nov. 11, with director Oogie Push scheduled to speak. In Indiana, students at Kankakee Valley Intermediate School created researched dioramas depicting Native American homes and village life.
