Indonesian parties consider inquiry into VP diploma
Several Indonesian political parties are weighing parliamentary action over Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s education credentials after court rulings questioned whether his overseas qualification met the requirements for vice-presidential candidates. The Constitutional Court declined to remove Gibran, who has already been sworn in, while the Supreme Court invalidated the ministry’s equivalency certificate. Three parties in President Prabowo Subianto’s coalition and one outside it are considering seeking a government explanation, launching an inquiry, or formally stating parliament’s position on alleged legal or constitutional violations. The debate unfolds as tensions grow between Prabowo and his predecessor Joko Widodo, Gibran’s father; reports also link the political strain to the arrest of a former Prabowo aide known as a Widodo loyalist. These parliamentary options could begin a process leading to impeachment, but no party has proposed impeachment.
