Iowa beats Penn State 2-1, reaches semifinals
No. 10 Iowa defeated No. 12 Penn State, 2-1, in the Big Ten field hockey tournament quarterfinals in Columbus, ending the Nittany Lions’ tournament run and advancing to Friday’s semifinals against top-seeded Maryland. Penn State took an early lead when Morgan Snyder’s long pass set up Joji Purdy, but Iowa’s Fréderique van Cleef tied the game just before halftime. Iowa controlled much of the second half and limited Penn State to two shots before Dionne van Aalsum scored the winner late in the game. The result avenged Penn State’s earlier upset of top-ranked Northwestern, while extending Iowa’s success against the Nittany Lions this season.
