Walter Lauridsen, 42, the brother-in-law of Iowa gubernatorial candidate and state auditor Rob Sand, was killed Thursday night on Highway 34 in Lucas County. According to the Iowa State Patrol, Lauridsen had parked his vehicle along the road and entered the westbound lane as an eastbound SUV moved into that lane to pass; he was struck and pronounced dead at the scene. Lauridsen was a Des Moines businessman known for his philanthropy.
