Italy Deploys Thousands Ahead of Nationwide Protests
Italy deployed additional soldiers, police and drone surveillance ahead of protests planned in Milan and other cities, following clashes and looting the previous weekend. The demonstrations were linked to rising living costs and economic grievances, with marches and other actions expected across the country. Milan added 500 soldiers to support thousands of law-enforcement personnel, while authorities extended security measures beyond the city center and monitored online activity for potential violence. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also announced tougher penalties for minors, whom police said were prominent among violent protesters. Police representatives said soldiers could provide immediate support but lack specialized training and some equipment used for public-order operations.
