Jackson Shooting Kills Woman, Dog

A woman and a dog were fatally shot during a domestic violence incident at a Jackson, California, apartment complex early Wednesday, Oct. 14. Police said the woman called 911 to report that a man was trying to shoot her; gunfire was heard before the call disconnected. Officers arriving at the apartment heard more shots, then took cover and negotiated with 39-year-old Michael Patrick O’Riley II, who had also called 911 and claimed an explosive device was attached to the door. A family member persuaded O’Riley to surrender, and officers found the woman and dog dead from gunshot wounds inside. O’Riley faces charges that include murder, animal cruelty, and violating a domestic violence court order; authorities also listed alleged unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition among the charges. Officials identified the woman as Kylene Douglas in one account, while police said her identity was being withheld pending family notification.
