Jaishankar Meets US Lawmakers in Mumbai as Rubio Visit Begins
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai on October 20, 2026, with Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and US Ambassador Sergio Gor present. Rubio is on a three-day India trip, his second in five months. He arrived with his wife Jeanette Rubio, was received at the Gateway of India by the Maharashtra Chief Minister, and paid tribute at the 26/11 memorial. Discussions covered energy security, defence cooperation, trade, investment and emerging technologies. Gor described "unrivaled momentum" in bilateral relations. Rubio said only a small number of trade items remained and that a deal would happen shortly. Talks were also described as nearing completion and in the legal drafting stage. The sides referenced the Lindsey Graham sanctions act, fuel imports, refining Venezuelan crude and planned Texas collaborations. American diesel prices were cited as above six dollars per gallon. Rubio is set to inspect Reliance Industries' oil refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Contested: none found in record. Next is the Jamnagar visit and further trade and energy work.
