Japan launches agency to coordinate disasters under stronger central command
Japan has launched a National Disaster Management Agency, placing disaster preparedness, emergency response and recovery under a stronger central command led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The agency will coordinate national ministries and local governments on earthquakes, heavy rains, volcanic eruptions and reconstruction, with particular attention to possible megaquakes and municipalities with limited resources. Reconstruction Minister Goshi Hosono will serve concurrently as disaster management minister and can recommend improvements to other government bodies, though ensuring swift, effective coordination remains a challenge. The agency has about 350 staff, and regional offices are planned, with locations to be selected in 2027 and hubs expected to open by 2028.
