Jason Webb Sworn In as Charleston Police Chief

Jason Webb, a 21-year veteran of the Charleston Police Department who rose from patrol officer to deputy chief, has been sworn in as its new chief, succeeding Scott Dempsey, who retired. Webb previously sought the chief’s role before Dempsey was selected, then served as deputy chief and learned from him ahead of the transition. Webb says he plans to modernize the department, consider new policing technology and tactics, strengthen recruitment and retention, and maintain open communication with the community. He also says supporting officers with the resources and working conditions they need will be a priority, while building on the strong foundation he believes Dempsey left behind.
