Jay’s BBQ Shack in Abilene was named the nation’s top Texas-style barbecue restaurant in USA TODAY’s 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards, based on reader votes among 10 expert-nominated restaurants. Texas claimed six places in the top 10, including The Salt Lick at No. 2, Down South Texas BBQ at No. 3 and Franklin Barbecue at No. 10. Owners Jay and Diana Stearns began the business as a food trailer in 2015 before moving to a brick-and-mortar location. The restaurant serves classic barbecue plates, sandwiches and tacos, and described the win as a first-time honor against barbecue restaurants outside Texas.
