Jones Concedes Closest Alabama Governor Race Since 2002

Doug Jones conceded Alabama’s 2026 governor’s race to Republican Tommy Tuberville on Wednesday, congratulating him and saying he hoped the new administration would work to improve life for all Alabamians. Unofficial results showed Tuberville winning with 51.8% of the vote to Jones’ 47.9%, in the closest Alabama gubernatorial contest since 2002. Jones had declined to concede Tuesday night, arguing that outstanding votes could narrow Tuberville’s lead, but later acknowledged the loss. He described the campaign as a step toward making Alabama more competitive for Democrats, pointing to legislative gains and stronger Democratic performances across the state.
