Jones Holds Solo Debate After Tuberville Declines
Alabama Democratic gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones held a solo event at Birmingham’s Carver Theatre after Republican Tommy Tuberville declined repeated invitations to debate, using clips of Tuberville’s statements and record to press him for answers. Jones criticized Tuberville’s positions and actions involving veterans and military nominations while presenting his own priorities, including lowering costs, expanding health care access and strengthening public education. In a separate interview, Jones identified data-center development as a major state concern and proposed a one-year construction moratorium while officials develop stronger safeguards; he also opposes tax incentives for developers and says companies should provide for their own power and water needs. Political observers noted that candidates may avoid debates when they see little electoral benefit or consider unscripted exchanges risky, while emphasizing that debate avoidance is not limited to one party.
