JPMorgan Ends Lending After AI Fund Loses 67%

JPMorgan Chase has ended its lending relationship with Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, after the fund lost 67% of its value in July. The losses followed leveraged bets on artificial-intelligence and semiconductor stocks during a global chip-stock sell-off, which triggered a margin call and forced the fund to unwind most of its public-equity positions. Situational Awareness subsequently eliminated leverage and sold much of its portfolio to Citadel, though it reportedly remained profitable for the year because of strong earlier gains. JPMorgan’s decision underscores the risks banks face when financing concentrated, leveraged trades, while Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Bank of America and Clear Street reportedly continue to provide brokerage services to the fund.
