Judge Orders Retrial in 1999 Albuquerque Murder
A New Mexico judge ordered a new trial for Linda Henning, ruling that she was mentally incompetent during her 2002 trial for the 1999 killing of Girly Chew and could not rationally assist her defense. Henning is serving a sentence of more than 73 years as an alleged accomplice to Chew’s estranged husband, Diazien Hossencofft, who is serving a life sentence; a Thursday hearing will consider whether Henning can be released while awaiting retrial. Separately, a Tennessee judge denied Jermis Jones’s motion for a new trial after his conviction for killing Perish Tyus, the mother of his child, in a 2022 ambush shooting. Jones is serving life in prison plus 34 years; Tyus’s cousin and young child were in the vehicle during the shooting.
