Judge Permanently Dismisses Six Wisconsin Players’ Lawsuit
A federal judge dismissed with prejudice a lawsuit by six former University of Wisconsin women’s basketball players alleging psychological abuse by former coach Marisa Moseley and failures by university officials to protect them. The players claimed Moseley pressured them to discuss personal matters, threatened playing time or scholarships, and mishandled their mental health; the suit also raised claims under the First and Fourteenth Amendments, the ADA and the Rehabilitation Act. Judge James D. Peterson ruled that the complaint did not establish plausible legal violations and that some claims were barred by the statute of limitations. He acknowledged that the allegations raised concerns about Moseley’s coaching practices but said they did not support the players’ claims under existing law; the case cannot be amended and refiled.
