Kagan says Supreme Court rulings undermine democracy
Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan said the court’s conservative majority has weakened American democracy through rulings on partisan gerrymandering, voting rights and campaign finance. She argued that the court’s refusal to curb partisan map-drawing has fueled a “race to the bottom,” reducing voting equality and pushing candidates toward political extremes. Kagan also criticized decisions limiting the Voting Rights Act, saying subsequent redistricting in Southern states showed how the rulings could threaten Black representation. She said the majority had failed to account for the real-world effects of its decisions on the political system.
