Mastodon Tooth Found in California Creek

A Pacific mastodon tooth was discovered along a San Mateo County creek during habitat work for the threatened California red-legged frog; the 23-centimeter fossil is considered intact and about 9,000 to 12,000 years old. The tooth has been donated to Stanford’s Doerr School of Sustainability, with a 3D copy planned for public outreach by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.
