Kentucky Parents Charged After Toddlers’ Hemp-Gummy Overdose
Kentucky authorities say two toddlers, ages 3 and 4, became unconscious after eating about 20 hemp-infused gummies left within reach at their Lexington home and were taken to a hospital. Investigators allege the parents waited more than five hours to seek help after the mother noticed the children were ill. The mother, Courtney Johnson, said she may have left the gummies out, while investigators cite phone messages in which Sean East allegedly accepted responsibility for leaving them unsecured; authorities say both parents knew the children had eaten them. Johnson was previously charged, and East was later arrested on two counts of child abuse or neglect and held on a $20,000 cash bond. Officials say the allegations against Johnson remain regardless of who left the gummies out because of the delay in getting medical care.
