King Charles Arrives in Guyana Amid Reparations Calls
King Charles III arrived in Guyana for a two-day state visit, the second stop on his Caribbean tour, marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between Guyana and Britain. He was welcomed by President Irfaan Ali and is scheduled to meet Guyanese leaders, businesspeople, Indigenous representatives and conservationists, with events highlighting the country’s culture, rainforest and growing economic ties with Britain. The visit also takes place amid renewed calls from Caribbean leaders for Britain to apologize and pay reparations for its role in the transatlantic slave trade; Ali has said an apology is the next step, while the British government has rejected demands for reparations and an apology. The King’s tour continues to Antigua and Barbuda, where he is due to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which will address slavery’s legacy.
