Lead Prevention Events Planned Across U.S. Communities
Health agencies are urging stronger prevention of lead exposure, which can cause lasting harm to children’s brains and nervous systems; no safe level is known, and sources include paint, dust, cookware, spices, toys and contaminated environments. The World Health Organization is calling for countries to strengthen regulations and remove lead hazards at their source, while planning new guidance and a global action plan for 2027. Health officials also stress screening young children, noting that blood tests are the only way to detect lead poisoning and recommending that families discuss testing with a health care provider. Community events in McKeesport, Lancaster and Richmond are offering families education, local resources and opportunities to test household items, with Lancaster’s event also providing free lead screening for children 6 and under. Shasta County is promoting childhood screening, particularly for children ages 1 and 2 and those who may have missed earlier tests.
